McCready Lying About Clemens?

April 29, 2008 – 3:20 pm

In an ABC 7 exclusive, there are some new developments in the controversy surrounding Roger Clemens’ alleged affair with country singer and North Fort Myers native Mindy McCready. It’s not just HIS credibility coming into question.

McCready - from her Nashville home - told the New York Daily News that “I cannot refute anything” from it’s Monday exposé on her affair with Clemens.  The paper indicated that the two met during Spring Training 1991 - when she was 15 and he was 28, married with two kids.

The Daily News said McCready went with Clemens back to his hotel room but they didn’t have sex.  The relationship didn’t get “intimate” until later.

However, we find out today that Clemens probably never set foot in Fort Myers in 1991.1991fortmyersboxscore.jpg

The Red Sox were still training in Winter Haven at that point, and as you can see from the box score from the team’s only visit to Fort Myers that year (3/16/91 vs. Minnesota), Clemens is nowhere to be found.  (Click on the image to enlarge the box score, courtesy Boston Red Sox.)

spoke with former teammate Mike Greenwell today who said that if The Rocket wasn’t pitching in that game, he never would have traveled to Fort Myers that spring. And, even if he had - it would have been just for the day - not overnight as McCready indicated.

McCready’s own mother seems to agree - she told me yesterday from her North Ft. Myers home that Mindy was NOT 15 when she met Clemens - she was 16 or 17 - already driving her own car.

When the Red Sox relocated their spring training to Fort Myers in 1993, McCready was 17.

Regardless of her age or whether the relationship was of sexual nature, the allegations couldn’t come at a worse time for Clemens.

Richard Emery, the lawyer for Brian McNamee - the former trainer Clemens is suing for defamation over steroid claims - said, “When you sue for defamation, you put your whole reputation in the community at issue. Anything is fair game…if the case heads to trial…we will be calling (McCready) as a witness.”

McCready is no stranger to controversy - she’s been arrested several times in recent years - but she’s also (not so ironically?) got several new projects in the works:  a documentary on her life, a reality show (”Mending Mindy”), and a new album.
