Beckett Finally Ready?

April 1, 2008 – 10:38 am

It’s not where he wanted to spend Opening Week ‘08, but Red Sox ace Josh Beckett fared well against minor-leaguers today in an extended spring training game at the team’s Ft. Myers complex.

The 27-year-old showed no signs of the back injury that kept him from travelling to Japan, allowing just 2 hits in 5 innings of work today.  He struck out 6 and the only run he gave up came on a solo shot from Yahmed Yema, a single-A outfielder.  Of the 64 pitches Beckett threw, 47 went for strikes. His fastballs were consistently in the 93-94 mph range.

While he refused comment after the game, there was no indication Beckett would need any more work in Ft. Myers before re-joining the Sox this weekend in Toronto.

Below is the video from the outing (via Silverlight - a simple new program worth the 20-second installation process).
